How to play Type Racer
Objective: Type as many complete, correctly spelled words as you can before the countdown timer reaches zero, pushing your words-per-minute score as high as your rating allows.
From the menu, pick a run length of 15, 30, or 60 seconds, then press Start Typing. The clock does not move until your first keystroke, so you can settle before you begin. Click the text panel (it also auto-focuses) and type the greyed word stream exactly as written. Correct letters turn green, wrong letters show white on a red block, and a blinking cyan cursor marks your spot. Press Escape or the Quit button to drop back to the menu at any time.
Your score is words per minute, worked out as completed correct words times 60 divided by the run length you chose. A word only counts when every letter in it is green, so one wrong letter left inside a word scores that word zero. Because the formula divides by duration, a 15-second run multiplies each finished word by four while a 60-second run multiplies by one. The Words and Accuracy readouts above the text update live as you type.
Backspace deletes the last letter and lets you retype it, turning it green so the word can still count toward your total. A wrong keypress, however, is added to your error tally permanently; Backspace corrects the letter on screen but never removes that recorded error. That is why your accuracy percentage keeps every mistake on the books even after you fix it. The word stream never runs dry either, refreshing once you pass roughly 60 percent so there is always text ahead.
When the timer hits zero the results screen shows your WPM and a rating: Novice under 20, Beginner at 20, Intermediate at 40, Advanced at 60, Expert at 80, and Speed Demon at 100 or more. To race other people, use Create Room or Join Room, enter a name, and share the six-character code. Rooms hold up to six players, need at least two to start, and expire after ten minutes. The host sets the duration; the leaderboard ranks by WPM, then accuracy.
Tips and strategy
Never leave a word broken
WPM counts only words where every letter is green, so a single stray letter drops that whole word from your total. Fix any wrong key with Backspace before you press space, or that entire word scores nothing no matter how fast you typed it.
Short runs reward bursts
The 15-second mode multiplies each completed word by four, while 60 seconds multiplies by one. A fast opening burst therefore inflates your WPM far more in a 15-second run, so choose the shortest length when you are chasing a high rating number.
Accuracy never forgives
Every wrong keystroke stays in your error count even after you Backspace and retype. Slowing down just enough to hit the right key the first time protects your accuracy percentage more than frantically correcting mistakes you have already logged.
Watch the ten-second red
The timer turns red with ten seconds left. Use that as your sprint cue but keep finishing whole words correctly, because any half-typed or error-filled word still on screen at the buzzer scores zero toward your WPM.
Host controls the race clock
In multiplayer only the host sets 15, 30, or 60 seconds and needs two players to start. Agree on a shorter duration for a tighter finish, since both the progress bars and everyone's final WPM are scaled by that number.
Frequently asked questions
How exactly is my WPM calculated?
It is the number of fully correct words you completed multiplied by 60, then divided by your run length in seconds. A word must have every letter typed correctly to count. Because of the division, the same words score a higher WPM in a 15-second run than in a 60-second run.
Does one typo ruin my whole score?
No, a typo only costs you the word it sits in, not your entire run. If you press Backspace and retype the letter correctly before the space, that word still counts. The mistake does stay on your accuracy total, but your WPM only loses words you leave uncorrected.
Can I play on my own?
Yes. The default Start Typing mode is a solo score attack with no opponent. You pick a duration, type against the countdown, and get a WPM, accuracy, error count, and rating on the results screen. Create Room and Join Room are only for racing other people live.
How many people can race together?
A room holds up to six players and needs at least two before the host can start. The host shares a six-character code that others enter along with a display name; duplicate names in the same room are blocked. Rooms expire ten minutes after creation, and you cannot join one once its race has begun.
Do longer durations use harder words?
No. The words come from the same pool of common English words no matter which length you pick, and there is no separate difficulty setting that changes them. Choosing 15, 30, or 60 seconds only changes how long you type and how your finished words are scaled into WPM.
What do the ratings above my score mean?
They label your WPM band on the results screen. Below 20 is Novice, 20 is Beginner, 40 is Intermediate, 60 is Advanced, 80 is Expert, and 100 or more earns Speed Demon. The rating is purely a description of the WPM you just posted and does not affect gameplay.
