About This Game

Play Tangram free online. Arrange the seven flat shapes to fill the target silhouette. A timeless geometry puzzle for all ages.

How to play Tangram

Objective: Fit all seven colored pieces into their dashed outlines to rebuild the square at the top of the board.

Each round shows a hollow square at the top of the board with seven dashed shape outlines inside it, and seven solid colored pieces scattered below. Those dashed outlines are the answer key: they mark exactly where every piece belongs. The layout is generated fresh each time: the square is split into two columns of random width, each column is cut into two rectangles at a random height, and three of those four rectangles are then sliced along a diagonal. The mix is always six triangles plus one whole rectangle, but where the cuts fall shifts every puzzle.

Press and drag a colored piece with your mouse or finger; the piece you grab jumps to the front so it never hides behind another. Release it over the matching dashed outline. If its corner lands within about 22 pixels of the right spot, it snaps into place, locks, and gains a green border. Snapping only checks position, so pieces never rotate and already face the correct way.

Matching is purely about location and shape. Look at each dashed outline and find the colored piece with the same silhouette. Six of the seven pieces are right triangles cut from rectangles, and one piece stays a full rectangle. The triangles come in two-piece pairs that together fill one rectangular slot, so a triangle's partner sits in the outline right beside it.

You win the moment all seven pieces are placed. The board shows a Square Complete message and adds one to your Puzzles solved count, saved in your browser so it survives a refresh. There is no timer, no move limit, and no way to lose, so rearrange freely until every slot is filled. Press New Puzzle for a fresh cut.

Tips and strategy

Place the rectangle first

Only one of the seven pieces keeps four sides; the other six are triangles. The single rectangle is the easiest shape to identify and slot, and placing it removes the largest chunk of ambiguity before you sort the triangle pairs.

Aim for the corner

Snapping checks a piece's top-left anchor corner, not its center, with a tolerance of about 22 pixels. Drop a piece so its corner sits over the outline's corner and it clicks in, even when the rest of it still looks slightly off.

Pair up the triangles

Each triangle is made by slashing a rectangle along one diagonal, so triangles come in matching pairs. Once you place one triangle, its partner belongs in the adjacent dashed outline that forms the other half of that same rectangle.

Clear space to grab

Grabbing a piece brings it to the front, but placed pieces lock and ignore your drag. If two loose pieces overlap in the scatter area below, slide the top one aside first so you can reach the piece underneath it.

Frequently asked questions

Do the pieces rotate?

No. Every piece is already oriented to match its slot, and the snap check compares only position, not angle. You just slide each piece into place. This differs from a classic tangram, where you rotate and flip seven fixed tiles to build shapes.

How close do I have to drop a piece?

The piece's anchor corner has to land within about 22 pixels of the target corner, in both directions. That is a forgiving window, so you do not need pixel-perfect aim; get close and the piece snaps to the exact spot and locks with a green border.

Can I fail a tangram or run out of time?

No. There is no timer, no move counter, and no fail state. Pieces you have not placed stay draggable, and you can keep rearranging until the square is finished. The only outcome is completing the square, which increases your Puzzles solved total.

Is every puzzle the same?

No. Each puzzle slices the square at random column widths and row heights, randomly picks which three of the four rectangles are cut into triangle pairs, and randomly flips the diagonal each triangle is split along. The New Puzzle button generates a new arrangement, so the slot shapes and positions differ every round.

What does the Puzzles solved number mean?

It counts how many squares you have completed on this device. The number is stored in your browser's local storage, so it persists after you refresh or close the tab, but it is not shared across devices and resets if you clear site data.
