About This Game

Flip cards and match the pairs in this free memory game. Easy and Hard grids, move counter, and timer. A simple, fast brain workout for all ages.

How to play Memory Match

Objective: Win by flipping over every card and matching all pairs of identical animal emojis until the whole board is cleared.

Pick a difficulty before you start. Easy is a 4x4 grid with 8 pairs, Medium uses 5 columns and 10 pairs, and Hard packs 18 pairs into a 6x6 grid of 36 cards. Every layout deals two copies of each animal emoji, drawn from a set of twenty, shuffled face down and shown as question marks. Clicking any difficulty button also deals a fresh board, so switching mid-game resets your moves and timer to zero.

Click a hidden card to flip it face up, then click a second one. If both show the same animal, they lock in place with a green tint and stay revealed. If they differ, both flip back to question marks after about three quarters of a second. You cannot flip a third card until the current pair resolves, and cards that are already matched or face up ignore your clicks.

Your move counter ticks up by one each time you turn over the second card of a pair, so every attempt counts as a single move whether or not it matches. The timer starts the instant you flip your first card and runs in minutes and seconds until the board is clear. There are no lives and no way to lose, so a wrong guess only costs moves and time.

The round ends the moment every card is matched. A green banner then shows the difficulty you cleared, your total moves, and your finishing time. Your best result is saved per difficulty in this browser, ranked by fewest moves first with finishing time as the tiebreaker, and it shows as Best in the status row. Use New Game or Play Again to replay and beat that number.

Tips and strategy

Anchor by position

When a wrong pair flips back, note exactly where each animal sat. The next time you reveal its twin, you already know the first location, turning a blind guess into a guaranteed match on your following move.

Open unseen cards first

Since a mismatch only costs one move, spend early turns flipping cards you have never seen instead of re-guessing. Building a mental map of the board pays off far more than gambling on partial information.

Chase the move count

Best scores rank on fewest moves before time, so the record rewards accuracy over speed. Slow down and recall positions rather than flipping two unknown cards when you already have a known match waiting to be completed.

Time only breaks ties

The clock never ends the game and only separates equal move counts. Do not rush your clicks; a hurried misclick still wastes a whole move, which hurts your ranking more than a few seconds will.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lose Memory Match?

No. The game has no lives, no time limit, and no fail state. The clock and the move counter simply keep running until you have matched every pair. The only outcome is a win, so the real challenge is clearing the board in as few moves and as little time as you can.

How is my best match record decided?

Your best is saved separately for each difficulty in your browser's local storage. A run replaces the old record only if it uses fewer moves, or the same number of moves in less time. The status row shows just the move total, while the win banner reports both moves and finishing time.

Does the counter add a move for every card?

No. A move is counted once per pair, at the moment you flip the second card. Turning over the first card of a pair does not raise the count. So eight flawless matches on Easy would register as exactly eight moves from start to finish.

How long before mismatched cards hide again?

A matched pair settles almost instantly, in about a third of a second. A mismatch stays visible for roughly three quarters of a second before both cards flip back to question marks, giving you a short window to memorize which animals appeared and where.
