About This Game

Play free Jigsaw Puzzle online. Drag the scrambled pieces back together to rebuild the picture. Choose your piece count. No sign-up, works on mobile and desktop.

How to play Jigsaw Puzzle

Objective: Swap the scrambled tiles until every piece sits in its correct grid position and the original picture is rebuilt, in as few swaps as you can.

The picture is cut into a grid and shuffled. Pick a difficulty first: Easy is a 3x3 grid of 9 tiles, Medium is 4x4 with 16 tiles, and Hard is 5x5 with 25 tiles. The board keeps a fixed 16 by 9 shape, so every tile is a wide rectangle holding one slice of the image. Choosing a difficulty starts a fresh scramble with a random picture from a set of eight covers.

You do not drag tiles, you swap them. Tap one tile to select it and it gets a cyan outline, then tap a second tile to exchange their positions instantly. Tapping the selected tile again cancels the selection without spending a swap. Every completed swap adds one to your Moves count above the board. There is no timer, no lives, and no way to lose, so plan each swap before committing to it.

You win the moment every tile lands in its home slot and the full image is reassembled. The win screen reports how many swaps you used and shows 'Puzzle Complete', and correctly placed tiles gain a faint green inset border. Your fewest-swaps total is saved in your browser as Best and only updates when you beat it, so a lower Moves count is the goal, not speed.

Two buttons sit under the board. Press and hold 'Hold to Preview' to lay the finished picture over the tiles at near-full opacity so you can check placement, then release to hide it again. 'New Puzzle' reshuffles the current difficulty and loads a fresh random image. Best is stored per browser only, with no account and no online scoreboard.

Tips and strategy

Preview then release

Hold the preview button to memorize where a few tiles belong, release it, then make those swaps from memory. The overlay sits over the board at about 92 percent opacity, so the finished picture is what you read while you hold it down.

Fix corners first

On the 16 by 9 grid, corner and edge tiles usually carry a distinct border slice. Lock those in early. They anchor the picture and shrink the pool of tiles left in the middle.

Chain your swaps

Every swap moves two tiles, so look for pairs that each sit in the other's home slot. One tap-tap places both at once, keeping your Moves count low.

Cancel freely

If you select a tile then spot a better move, tap that same tile again to deselect it. The cancel costs zero swaps, so changing your mind never inflates your Moves count.

The history of Jigsaw Puzzle

The jigsaw puzzle traces back to the 1760s, when John Spilsbury, a London mapmaker, mounted printed maps on wood and cut them into pieces along country borders. These 'dissected maps' taught children geography, so the earliest puzzles were classroom tools. This version is a swap-tile take: the image is sliced into a grid and scrambled, and you rebuild it by exchanging tile positions rather than fitting cut pieces.

Frequently asked questions

How do I swap two jigsaw tiles?

You swap, you do not drag. Tap one tile to select it, shown by a cyan outline, then tap a second tile to exchange their positions. Each swap adds one to your Moves count. Tapping the selected tile again deselects it without using a swap.

How is my score measured?

By swaps. The Moves counter tracks every exchange, and the win screen reports the total. Your lowest total is saved as Best in your browser and only changes when you finish in fewer swaps than before.

Is there a timer or a way to lose the jigsaw?

No. There is no clock, no lives, and no failure state. You can take as long as you like and make as many swaps as needed. The only pressure is beating your own Best score, since the game rewards the fewest swaps.

Can I see the finished picture while playing?

Yes. Press and hold the 'Hold to Preview' button to lay the complete image over the board at near-full opacity, then release to hide it. Study where the pieces belong while you hold it, then release and make your swaps.
