About This Game

Play Blackjack free online. Beat the dealer to 21 without going bust. Hit, stand, and chase a high chip score. No bets, no sign-up.

How to play Blackjack

Objective: Beat the dealer by finishing with a hand total closer to 21 than theirs without going over 21.

Press Deal to start a round. You and the dealer each get two cards, but the dealer's second card stays face down until the round ends. Card values are straightforward: number cards count their face value, Jack, Queen, and King each count as 10, and an Ace counts as 11 unless that would bust you, in which case it drops to 1 automatically. Your running total shows next to the word You above your cards, so you always know exactly where you stand.

During your turn you have two buttons. Hit draws one more card from the deck and adds it to your hand. Stand keeps your current total and ends your turn. There is no limit on how many times you can Hit, but the moment your total reaches or passes 21 the round ends on its own and no further Hit is allowed. Reaching 21 exactly is fine and usually strong; passing 21 is a bust and an instant loss for that round.

When you Stand, the dealer flips the hidden card and draws automatically. The dealer keeps taking cards while their total is below 17 and stops as soon as it reaches 17 or higher. Then the two totals are compared. The higher total without busting wins. If the dealer busts, you win. Equal totals are a Push, which returns your bet and changes nothing. The result line prints the outcome in green for a win, red for a loss, or neutral for a push.

Each round moves 10 chips. A win adds 10, a loss subtracts 10, and a push leaves your count unchanged. If your first two cards total 21, that is a natural Blackjack and it pays a larger 15 chips instead of the usual 10, as long as the dealer does not also hold 21. Your chip count is shown at the top and saved in your browser, so it carries over between visits. It never drops below zero, and Deal Again starts the next round.

Tips and strategy

Respect the dealer 17 rule

The dealer must draw until reaching 17 and then must stop. If your total is 17 or higher you are already ahead of a dealer who has to keep hitting from a low card, so standing is often smarter than risking a bust.

Read the dealer up card

Only the dealer's first card is visible during your turn. A low up card like 4, 5, or 6 means the dealer often busts drawing toward 17, so you can stand on a modest total instead of risking another Hit.

Hit hard totals of 11 or less

You cannot bust when your total is 11 or under, because the worst single card still leaves you at 21 or lower. Always Hit in that range to build toward 21 with zero downside for that draw.

Value your soft Aces

An Ace counts as 11 until a bust would happen, then quietly becomes 1. A hand like Ace plus 6 is worth 17 but can still take a card safely, so you can Hit soft totals without the usual bust danger.

Chase the natural payout

A two card 21 pays 15 chips instead of 10, a 50 percent bonus. You cannot force it, but knowing an Ace with any 10, Jack, Queen, or King triggers it explains why those opening hands settle instantly in your favor.

The history of Blackjack

Blackjack grew out of European card games of the eighteenth century, most often traced to the French game Vingt-et-Un, meaning twenty-one. It spread to North America in the nineteenth century, where the name Blackjack is commonly linked to an early bonus payout for a hand of the ace of spades with a black jack.

The modern game became a mathematical landmark in the mid twentieth century, when statisticians worked out basic strategy and later card counting, showing that player decisions genuinely shift the odds. That analysis is why the guidance here focuses on when to Hit and when to Stand against the dealer's forced draw to 17.

Frequently asked questions

How many chips do I start with?

You begin with 100 chips. Every standard round wins or loses 10 chips, a natural Blackjack pays 15, and a push leaves the count flat. The total is stored in your browser under a local key, so it carries across sessions on the same device. It cannot fall below zero, so you can keep dealing even at a low balance.

Does the dealer hit on 17?

No. The dealer draws only while the total is below 17. As soon as the hand reaches 17 or more the dealer stops, whether that 17 is made with an Ace or not. This all happens automatically after you Stand, so you never control the dealer's draws yourself.

What happens if I get 21 on the deal?

If your first two cards total 21 that is a natural Blackjack. The round ends immediately and pays 15 chips instead of the usual 10, provided the dealer is not also holding 21. If both of you have 21 on the deal, the hands are compared and the round settles as a normal outcome rather than the bonus.

Can I bust before the dealer even plays?

Yes. If a Hit pushes your total over 21 you bust and lose that round instantly, before the dealer's hidden card is even revealed. The round also ends the moment you hit exactly 21. Because of this, deciding when to Stand is the core skill of the game.

Is there a Push, and what does it do?

A Push happens when your total and the dealer's total are equal and neither has busted. The result line shows Push, it's a tie, and your chip count does not change for that round. It is neither a win nor a loss, so you keep the chips you already had and move on to the next deal.

Can I split, double down, or change my bet?

No. This version keeps to the core loop of Hit and Stand with a fixed 10 chip stake per round, plus the 15 chip natural Blackjack bonus. There are no split, double down, insurance, or surrender options, and you cannot raise or lower the amount wagered on a hand.
