You have probably seen a deepfake video -- maybe a celebrity saying something they never said, or a politician in a fabricated scandal. In 2026, AI-generated synthetic media has reached a point where distinguishing real from fake is genuinely difficult, even for experts.

This is not just a tech curiosity. It is a threat to trust, democracy, and personal safety. Here is everything you need to understand.


How Deepfakes Work

At their core, deepfakes use neural networks to learn patterns in images, video, or audio and then generate new content that mimics those patterns.

Face Swapping

The most common type. An AI learns the facial features, expressions, and movements of person A, then maps them onto person B's face in a video.

How it works:

  1. 1Collect hundreds or thousands of images/video of the target person
  2. 2Train an encoder network to compress facial features into a compact representation
  3. 3Train a decoder to reconstruct faces from that representation
  4. 4Swap the decoder -- feed person A's facial features through person B's decoder

Voice Cloning

Text Generation

  • AI-generated audio of political candidates saying inflammatory things has been used in elections worldwide
  • Fake videos of candidates can spread faster than fact-checkers can debunk them

Financial Fraud

Verification Steps

  3. 3Look for the original. Search for the original speech or event that the video claims to show
