Artificial Intelligence

Fundamentals

Computer systems that can perform tasks that normally require human thinking, like understanding language, recognizing images, or making decisions.

Think of AI like a very fast student who learned from billions of textbooks. It can answer questions and spot patterns way quicker than any person, but it does not truly understand what it is reading the way you do.

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is a broad field of computer science focused on building machines that can do things we usually think of as requiring human brains. This includes understanding what people say, recognizing faces in photos, translating between languages, and even driving cars.

AI is not one single technology -- it is an umbrella term covering many different approaches. Some AI systems follow a strict set of rules written by programmers. Others learn from huge amounts of data and figure out patterns on their own, which is called machine learning. The most advanced AI systems today use deep learning, a technique inspired by how the human brain is structured.

You interact with AI every day, even if you do not realize it. When your phone unlocks with your face, that is AI. When Netflix recommends a show, that is AI. When you ask Siri or Alexa a question, that is AI too. The recent explosion of tools like ChatGPT and Gemini has brought AI into the spotlight because these systems can hold conversations, write essays, and generate images in ways that feel remarkably human.

It is worth knowing that today's AI is considered "narrow" AI -- it is good at specific tasks but does not truly understand the world the way a person does. A chatbot can write a poem, but it does not know what sadness feels like. The idea of a general AI that thinks like a human across all domains is still a research goal, not a reality.
