Generative AI

Fundamentals

AI systems that can create new content -- text, images, music, video, or code -- rather than just analyzing existing data.

Think of generative AI like a very talented improv actor. You give it a prompt -- a starting idea -- and it improvises something new on the spot. It is not reciting a script or copying someone else's performance; it is creating something original based on everything it learned during training.

Generative AI refers to any artificial intelligence system that can produce new content. Unlike traditional AI that mostly classifies or predicts things (is this email spam? will it rain tomorrow?), generative AI actually creates something that did not exist before: a paragraph of text, an image, a piece of music, a video clip, or a block of code.

The "generative" part is the key idea. When you ask ChatGPT to write a birthday poem for your friend, it generates that poem from scratch -- it is not copying from a database of pre-written poems. When you give Midjourney a description like "a cat astronaut on Mars," it creates an entirely new image. These creations are based on patterns the AI learned during training, combined in novel ways to match your request.

Generative AI exploded into the mainstream in late 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT, and since then the technology has expanded rapidly. Text generators like ChatGPT and Claude can write almost anything. Image generators like Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion turn words into pictures. Music generators like Suno compose songs. Video generators like Runway create clips from descriptions. Code assistants like GitHub Copilot and Cursor write software.

The technology raises big questions about creativity, copyright, and jobs. If an AI can write a news article or paint a picture, what does that mean for writers and artists? These discussions are ongoing, but one thing is clear: generative AI is one of the most impactful technologies of our time, and understanding it is increasingly important.
