Can AI Generate Realistic Images?

AI image generation has reached a level of photorealism that was unimaginable just a few years ago. Models like Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion can produce images of people, landscapes, products, and scenes that look entirely real. In many cases, even trained eyes cannot distinguish AI-generated photos from actual photographs.

This capability has legitimate and valuable applications. Product photography, architectural visualization, stock imagery, concept art, and creative projects all benefit from the ability to generate custom photorealistic images on demand without expensive photo shoots.

However, the implications for misinformation are serious. AI-generated images of events that never happened, statements that were never made, and situations that do not exist can spread rapidly on social media. The technology makes it trivially easy to create convincing fake evidence. This is a genuine societal concern that is being actively addressed through watermarking, detection tools, and regulation, but solutions are still evolving.

The remaining technical challenges are mostly about consistency and control. Generating a single impressive image is easy, but maintaining consistency across multiple images of the same character or setting is difficult. Fine details like text, hands, and specific spatial relationships still sometimes fail.
