About the Video Editor
This Video Editor lets you trim, crop, resize, compress, and combine video clips without installing software or handing your footage to a server. Most browser editors upload your file first, then queue it and watermark the result. This one loads the video straight into the tab, so a clip you would rather not send to a stranger never leaves your machine.
It runs FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The engine downloads once on your first export, then every trim, crop, filter, and overlay is turned into an FFmpeg command and run inside the tab. A trim-only export copies the video stream directly, so it finishes fast, while any other edit re-encodes with H.264. The finished MP4 downloads to your device automatically.
It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark or export cap. Your source file stays local because the video data is never uploaded, only the engine is fetched. You get a timeline with multiple clips, undo and redo, text and image overlays, background music, and an audio extractor that saves the soundtrack as an MP3.
How to use the Video Editor
- 1Drag a video onto the drop area or click to browse (mp4, webm, mov, avi, mkv, flv, up to 500 MB).
- 2Pick a tool from the left sidebar: Trim, Compress, Resize, Crop, Transform, Text, or Audio.
- 3Set trim points by dragging the clip edges on the timeline, or adjust the Compress and Resize controls.
- 4Add background music or extract audio from the Audio panel, and drop captions from the Text tool.
- 5Press play to preview, then use Split, Duplicate, and Delete on the timeline, or Cmd/Ctrl+Z to undo.
- 6Click Export in the top bar and the finished MP4 downloads automatically.
What you can use it for
Trim a screen recording
Cut the dead air off the front and back of a recording before you post it. Load the clip, drag the timeline handles to the start and end, and export. A trim-only edit copies the stream, so it finishes fast with no quality change.
Shrink a clip to share
A phone video too big to message. Open the Compress panel and raise the quality number, or use Resize to step down to 720p or 480p. Export, and the MP4 comes back much smaller.
Add a caption card
Put a title or lower-third on a clip. Use the Text tool to drop a caption, drag it into place on the canvas, and set its on-screen duration from the timeline. It renders on a rounded translucent background.
Swap the soundtrack
Replace or mute the original audio. In the Audio panel, drop an mp3 or wav as background music, pull the volume slider down to silence the source, or extract the existing audio to keep it as a separate MP3.
What the compress quality slider actually does
The Compress panel exposes a single number that maps to FFmpeg's CRF, or Constant Rate Factor, which starts at 28. CRF decides how aggressively H.264 discards detail. Lower numbers keep more data and make a bigger file; higher numbers throw away more and make a smaller one. Around 18 to 23 looks visually lossless; the low 30s shows blocky artifacts in motion and gradients.
Because the encoder targets a quality level rather than a fixed size, the same CRF yields a small file for simple footage and a larger one for high-motion video. Every edit except a pure trim runs through this re-encode, so trimming alone skips the quality loss.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. Your file is read directly by the browser tab and processed on your own machine with FFmpeg. The only thing fetched from the internet is the engine itself, once, on your first export. The video and the finished MP4 never touch a server.
What can I import, and what format comes out?
You can load mp4, webm, mov, avi, mkv, and flv video, plus jpg, png, gif, webp, and bmp images. Whatever goes in, the export is an H.264 MP4. The separate audio extractor saves an MP3 at 192 kbps.
Is there a limit on the video file size I can edit?
Yes, 500 MB per file. Because everything runs in your browser's memory, very large or very long clips can be slow to encode and may run out of memory. The editor is built for desktop and is not offered on mobile.
Why does nothing happen when I export?
If you have not changed a single setting, the tool stops with a 'No changes to apply' message. Adjust a control first, such as trim, compress, or volume, then export. The engine also loads on your first render, so that one is slower.
Can I combine several clips?
Yes. Add more files from the Media panel and they appear on the timeline. You can split a clip at the playhead, duplicate it, delete it, and move overlays between lanes above the video.
