About the Pomodoro Timer

The Pomodoro Timer runs focus sessions on a countdown and keeps a record of how much you actually work. The problem it solves is the gap between meaning to focus and knowing whether you did. Instead of a bare clock, it logs every completed focus block, adds up your minutes per day, and tracks how many days in a row you show up. You set the timer, work until the beep, then take the break it queues.

You start in Focus mode and press Start. A colored ring drains as the countdown ticks down each second, with minutes and seconds shown in the center. When a focus block ends, an 800 Hz beep plays, the session is recorded, and the timer switches to a short break, or a long break after the number of sessions you set. Break end switches you back to focus, and a 'Round X of N' line shows where you are in the cycle.

The timer runs entirely in the tab, so it is free, needs no account, and keeps counting even offline. Your sessions, streaks, and settings are saved to your browser's localStorage under the key 'pomodoro-stats', so nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-in. If you grant permission, it also fires a desktop notification when a focus block or break ends, so you can leave the tab and still hear back when it is time to switch.

How to use the Pomodoro Timer

  1. 1Pick a mode using the Focus, Short Break, or Long Break tabs at the top.
  2. 2Open Settings and drag the sliders to set Focus Duration (15 to 60 min), Short Break (3 to 15 min), Long Break (10 to 30 min), and Sessions Until Long Break (2 to 6).
  3. 3Flip the Auto-start Breaks and Auto-start Focus toggles if you want the next timer to begin on its own.
  4. 4Press Start to run the countdown, and press it again (now Pause) to stop the clock without losing your place.
  5. 5Press Reset to set the current mode's timer back to its full duration.

What you can use it for

Deep work blocks

Push Focus Duration to 50 minutes and Sessions Until Long Break to 3 for longer stretches on writing or coding. After three blocks the timer gives you a long break, and the Focus Hours stat shows whether the day added up to real output.

Studying for exams

Run 25-minute blocks across an afternoon and check the Today panel for Sessions and Focus Minutes. The Day Streak counter rewards studying on consecutive days, which helps when you pace revision over a week instead of cramming the night before.

Breaking a stall

When a task feels too big to start, drop Focus Duration to 15 minutes and commit to one block. The short countdown lowers the barrier to beginning, and the recorded session and beep give you a clean point to decide whether to continue.

Frequently asked questions

Is my data stored anywhere other than my browser?

No. Every session, streak, and setting is written to your browser's localStorage on your own device, with no account or upload. The trade-off is that clearing site data, private browsing, or switching browsers or computers starts you from an empty history, because nothing syncs between devices.

Do breaks count toward my stats and streak?

No. Only completed focus blocks are recorded. Each finished focus session adds one to your session count and its minutes to that day's total. Breaks are timed and beep when done, but they never raise your Focus Minutes, Sessions, or Day Streak, so the numbers reflect actual work time.

How does the day streak work?

A day counts once you complete at least one focus session that day. Your current streak is the run of consecutive days ending today. If you have not finished a session today but did yesterday, yesterday still counts as a grace day, so a missed morning does not reset you before the day is over.

What happens if I switch tabs while the timer runs?

The countdown uses a one-second interval, which browsers throttle in background tabs. On some browsers the clock drifts slower than real time when the tab is hidden, so a block may take longer than the wall clock. Granting notification permission helps, since the end-of-session alert still fires.

Will I hear a sound when a session ends?

Yes. The timer generates a short 800 Hz beep through the Web Audio API when any focus block or break completes, with no sound file to load. If your browser blocks audio until you interact with the page, press Start at least once so the first beep is allowed to play.
